Today the Greater Poweshiek Community Foundation (GPCF) releases its 2013 Annual Report: Celebrate Community, which showcases the organization’s commitment to and impact upon the communities it serves. GPCF serves as a catalyst and leader for innovative solutions to our community’s most challenging problems and helps donors respond to causes that matter to them. The Annual Report highlights GPCF’s recent accomplishments, which include increasing its assets from $5.4 million to almost $6.5 million, distributing over $185,000 in grants and scholarships, and working with donors and volunteers to establish three new funds in response to community needs. These funds include Big Hearts For Tiny Hands, the Grinnell Regional Mental Health Endowment Fund, and the Tiger Packs Program, which distributed over 700 bags of food to local students in 2013.
Since 1989, GPCF has worked to support the community and enhance local quality of life by helping people accomplish their charitable giving objectives, managing and preserving funds, and distributing investment earnings in the form of grants. According to Board President Nancy Maly, GPCF’s dedication to its goals is largely inspired by Poweshiek County residents, who care, serve, and actively contribute to building community. “Small towns may be viewed as something lesser than bigger neighbors because they have fewer stores or restaurants. But what small towns have more often than not, is a better sense of community and all the ways in which folks in that community help hold things together and work for the common good,” Maly writes. The Community Foundation harnesses this spirit, energizing local givers to help fund community development projects and a variety of services throughout Poweshiek County.
2014 marks the 100th anniversary of community foundations in the United States, and GPCF is celebrating its own milestone–25 years of growing and giving! This theme will be highlighted at the Foundation’s annual charity event on Saturday, May 10th at the Quad Dining Hall on the Grinnell College Campus. Local businesses and individuals have donated over $15,000 in items to be auctioned off. The highlight of the evening will be the drawing of the 50/50 raffle, where one lucky winner will go home with up to $25,000 in cash.
